Individual therapy or counseling can be utilized for a variety of things. A common reason is people might notice what they label as depression or anxiety. In other cases, maybe they have experienced a loss, a traumatic event, or are struggling with meaning. In other cases maybe there is just a deep sense of "something isn't right". At Fowler Family Therapy, we examine the context you are in, your history, your values, and a variety of other factors to see what the core issue is to address. One way to think of this is to put it in medical terms. Do you have a cough because of the flu or the common cold? Cough drops likely will help for a bit if you have the flu, but not address the real problem. We want to address the real issue to lessen the chances of needing to return to therapy. We want to work together with you to do that.
One of the ways we do that is EMDR. EMDR is an evidenced-based approach to deal with many things-trauma, depression, anxiety, fears, obsessions, and more. This approach is not a good fit for everyone, but is a great form of treatment in many cases. Check out the video below for more information.

EMDR has done incredibly things regarding trauma for many people. People often think of trauma as things like sexual assault or experiences veterans have in war. These absolutely fall into that category for many people. We can experience trauma without having these experiences though. A more helpful view is trauma is when 1) we change the way we think of ourselves, 2) change the way we think of others, and/or 3) change the way we experience the world.

“Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others. Therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction.”
